With the national championship less than 3 weeks away, fans are eagerly expecting one of the best national championships in recent history. There shouldn't be any reason for let down in this game, as both Florida State and Auburn are ranked in the top ten for total offense, each averaging over 500 yards per game. I'm gonna say it now and i'll say it again in the next few weeks, defense will be the deciding factor in this game. The bottom line is that Florida State's defense is ranked number two behind Alabama in terms of total defense, allowing only 4 yards more at 254.14 yards per game. I understand that FSU isn't in the SEC and that the competition in the ACC is much worse, but the fact still remains that Auburn's defense isn't even ranked in the FBS top 50. This will be the difference in the game for Florida State.
This isn't one of those Notre Dame Alabama defensive arguments from last year either. Florida State has a high powered offense that can compete with any SEC defense. They have more athletes on both sides of the ball then ND did last year. Not to discredit anything about last year's Notre Dame team, but Florida State's quick strike offense is much more geared towards stopping a team like Auburn or Alabama. The style of many of these SEC teams is ground and pound, totaling over 400 yards a game and passing when they need to. The Florida State defense has the front seven and secondary to counter this type of attack. They have shut down opposing offenses all season, as they have only allowed more than 14 points in a game TWO TIMES. This combined with threats at every skill position, including WR Kelvin Benjamin, WR Rashad Greene, WR Kenny Shaw, TE Nick O' Leary, and a trio of great running backs, will give Florida State the edge in this game.
