From Espn.com:
The game
ended on a critical call. With 0.3 seconds remaining, Florida Gulf Coast guardJamail Jones threw an inbounds pass over 7-foot-3
center Jordan Omogbehin to Chase Fieler at the opposite end of the court.
Fieler caught the ball and dropped in short
jumper as he fell backward out of bounds. The shot was ruled too late because
it was not a tip-in.:
"Rule 5, Section 18, Article 1: In any period, when the game
clock displays 10ths of seconds and play is to be resumed by a throw-in or a
free-throw when 3/10 (.3) of a second or less remains on the game clock, a
player may not gain possession of the ball and try for a field goal. Such
player can only score a field goal by means of a tap of a pass or of a missed
free throw."
That is
the rule and that is why the shot was pretty much immediately ruled as no
good. But, looking at the video, it is
clear that the time started as soon as Fieler caught the ball and then
proceeded to get the shot off before it was 0.0 on the clock and before the red
buzzer came on. Obviously this rule
needs to be reconsidered because obviously he got the shot off! I hate how the refs go to look at the monitor
and clearly see the ball was out of his hands before the clock was at 0, but
still rule it as no good. This actually
drives me nuts and if I was a legit Florida Gulf Coast fan (Outside of students
and family, do those actually exist?), I would be fuming. But, I’m not so it just makes me really
really really annoyed.
