Southern Jaguars beat Champion Baptist College 116-12

ESPN- BATON ROUGE, La. -- Southern set an NCAA record by scoring the first 44 points of the game en route to a 116-12 blowout of Champion Baptist College on Monday.

The Jaguars (4-9) broke the all-divisions record that used to be held by Seton Hall, which scored the first 34 points against Kean College on Nov. 19, 1998. They did not set a record for margin of victory. Long Island University beat Medgar Evers 179-62 on Nov. 26, 1997.

Wow.  This reminds of a high school girls basketball game that happened in Dallas a couple years ago that resulted in a firing of a coach after a 100-0 rout.  But this is college basketball.  Men's college basketball.  I'm telling you the 5 of us bloggers could go out and put on a better performance then the boys from Champion Baptist College.  The Tigers? (I think that is their mascot) scored their first points with 5:10 left in the first half.  On a free throw.  Couldn't even hit a layup to get on the board at that time.  The score at half was 57-6 so the Tigers clearly got hot at the end of the half.

And as for Southern, well this is a team that almost became the first 16 seed to beat a 1 seed last year when they came oh so close to knocking of Kelly Olynyk and the Gonzaga Bulldogs.  So why is Southern scheduling this game?  Looking at their schedule, it was clear that they needed a win as they have already played Marquette, Florida, Arizona, and Baylor.  But, I feel like they could have done a little better with their scheduling of a lesser team, since Champion Baptist College is what, D2? D3?

I did some research and could not find if they are either of those but they do play in the Association of Christian College Athletics.  Sounds like them against the Mandell JCC Hartford league would be a matchup for the ages.  When trying to find a wikipedia page for them to tell me information, they didn't have one so that clearly tells you what a joke of a basketball team is.  This website is the only thing I could find confirming them of existence which is not much of a website at all.  Cheap school though.

But, yeah, 44-0. 116-12.  Yikes.

PS- Good to be back
