What a fuckin' way to bring in a new year huh? An awesome Winter Classic then went to a shoot out (and that I predicted the winner of), the US hockey team roster was finally announced, and then just an amazing Rose Bowl to cap off what was an incredible day to be a sports fan. Here's a few notes on today, in case you didn't see everything.
Winter Classic: Just a sick game between two teams who you could tell really wanted it. Since it went to overtime the Red Wings got a point too meaning they jump to six and the Leafs jump to five over the Capitals in the new East standings. Not a flashy game by any means, but a really gritty game with snow falling the whole time and a sell out crowd at the Big House. The NHL gets it. Here's a recap from ESPN if you missed it.
US Hockey Team Announced: The final US Olympic Hockey team roster was announced today following the Winter Classic. Lot of St. Louis Blues representatives which makes sense, but more centers than I expected. Also surprised that Howard made the roster as the third goalie, figured it was gonna be Bishop from Tampa Bay, but the third goalie doesn't really matter too much. Also a lot of veterans on this squad like Miller, Kane, Kessel, etc. I really like the team and think they have a legitimate shot at the gold. And super pumped that JVR from the Leafs made the squad, guy played a hell of a game this afternoon.
Rose Bowl: An unbelievably gritty game between two teams that like to play a tough style of football. The game went back and forth for a while, but Michigan State scored 17 unanswered and their defense played their asses off and held Stanford to only three points in the second half. Kyle Ellsworth made the big tackle on a 4th and 1 at the end of the game by jumping over the line and stuffing the fullback, which is awesome considering he's a walk on fifth year senior.
So just a great day to be a sports fan/American all in all. Can you imagine not being an American and having to wake up today with no sports? Like what do they do in China on New Years day, work? HA! Stupid Chinese.
