I Solemnly Swear to Never Root for A Rival

So this is without a doubt going to be a topic on dude radio this weekend. The topic not only applies to sports but to all of life. Just to give you guys a picture of my mindset at work on most days,
So I decided to go away from the books for today and was listening to Mike and Mike on my computer. Normally I love listening to these guys and I rarely disagree with the points that they make. However, this morning they brought up an email from a Michigan fan saying that they were rooting for Michigan State in the Rose Bowl against Stanford last night.

Whoever emailed in this point immediately lost all credibility as a human being. I think one of the first things that everyone should be taught from a young age is to never root for a rival. I can't really take a stance on this issue from a Providence standpoint, (we're not good enough to have rivals) but I can speak about it as a fan of other sports. As a Florida State fan, there is a zero percent chance that I will be rooting for Clemson against Ohio State tomorrow night.

I don't care about what it could do for the ACC from a money or reputation standpoint. They're a rival of the team that i'm a fan of, therefore I want them to lose every big game that they play in.

This made me think about the mindset that I had as a youngin' all the way up to high school. Any of the West Hartford readers will probably understand this a little bit more. When I was at Bristow Middle School, I took my role as a Bristow Bulldog pretty seriously. Every time KP or Sedgwick fucked up, that was a win for me. Oh you guys got your 8th grade end of the year field trip cancelled because somebody peed in the pool, sorry but that's a win for Bristow and that's a win for me.

Things like that gave Bristow the competitive edge over the other middle schools. This mindset intensified in to my time at Hall High School. Bottom line is that I expected every student at Hall High School to want Conard to fail in everything that they did. Rivalries go beyond sports, you should want to be better than your rivals in anything that you do. You should be chirping your rivals about everything from test scores to the religion that they choose. That's what the Reservation did in our years at Hall, and that's why we never lost to another fan section. You gotta pick apart every aspect of your rivals lives, no exceptions.

I'll be expecting quite a bit of feedback on this topic from the nearly full staff of KP kids on this blog.
